How this calculator works

Surcharge per mile = (current diesel price − base price) ÷ MPG. For a load, multiply by the miles.

The base price and MPG come from your contract or the shipper's fuel schedule. The base is the diesel price your linehaul rate already covers. The surcharge pays you back for every dollar above it. The MPG is whatever the contract says, which may not match your truck.

The current price is usually the weekly on-highway diesel average from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (people often still call it the DOE price). Contracts say whether to use the U.S. average or a region, and which week counts, so check yours. This calculator starts with the latest EIA week we have and lets you pick a region or type your own price.

When diesel is under the base price, the formula goes negative. Most schedules pay $0 in that case, so that's the default here. Tick "Let the surcharge go negative" if your contract credits the difference back.
