Show the math

  1. Handling units

Add the handling units on every line

    20 + 2 = 22

  2. Packages

Add the packages on every line

    1,120 + 96 = 1,216

  3. Weight

Add the weight on every line

    36,800 + 2,150 = 38,950 lb

The totals row on the PDF is the sum of each column. Check the weight against the scale ticket if you scaled the load, and write any shortage or damage on the BOL before the receiver signs it. Once it's signed clean, a claim gets harder.

How this calculator works

Totals = the sum of handling units, packages, and weight across every commodity line.

Under 49 CFR 373.101, a for-hire motor carrier has to issue a receipt or bill of lading for property it takes for interstate transportation. The BOL must show the names of the consignor and consignee, the origin and destination points, the number of packages, a description of the freight, and the weight, volume, or measurement of the freight if that's used to rate it. The check beside the result shows whether each of those is filled in.

A straight bill of lading consigns the freight to a named consignee and can't be negotiated, meaning it can't be signed over to someone else to transfer ownership of the goods (49 U.S.C. 80103(b)). That's the kind almost every truckload and LTL shipment moves on.

Freight terms. Prepaid means the shipper pays the freight bill, collect means the consignee pays, and third party means someone else, usually the broker or the shipper's logistics company, gets the bill. Put their name and address on the BOL when you pick third party.

Hazmat. If anything on the load is a hazardous material, the shipping paper also has to meet 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart C. This form marks hazmat lines in an HM column and prints an emergency response phone number and the shipper's certification. It does not check the hazmat description itself, so use the shipper's own hazmat shipping papers when they provide them.

Keep a copy. Part 373.101 says to keep the BOL information as prescribed in 49 CFR Part 379. Its schedule lists copies of bills of lading at one year (Appendix A to Part 379).
