Notes from the source
Matrix footnote #31 (INDIANA): Effective January 1, 2024, Indiana has adopted fuel tax rates for newly recognized fuel types: Electricity (EV), Hydrogen(HD), and Hythane (HT). Indiana’s fuel tax rate for these fuel types is based on the taxable distance traveled on Indiana Roads. The tax due for these fuel types is calculated by multiplying Indiana taxable distance traveled by the Indiana tax rate (D x R = T). Changed rates from 0.3400 to .03500 and from 0.5700 to 0.5900 Changed Rate changed from Gasoline 35 to36 Sp Fuel from 59 to 61 Changed Rates for Gasoline from 0.3600 to 0.3700 & Special Fuel from 0.6100 to 0.6300 The matrix has a surcharge row for this jurisdiction but lists no Special Diesel surcharge.

Indiana vs. its neighbors, Q2 2026
| Jurisdiction | Diesel + surcharge | vs. IN |
|---|---|---|
| Illinois | $0.7380 | +$0.1080 |
| Indiana | $0.6300 | — |
| Michigan | $0.5240 | −$0.1060 |
| Ohio | $0.4700 | −$0.1600 |
| Kentucky | $0.3250 | −$0.3050 |
On an IFTA return, a higher rate doesn't mean you pay more overall. Fuel you buy in a high-rate state earns a bigger credit. What matters is where you burn the fuel versus where you buy it.
